Seventh and Eighth Grade English Overview

Students engage in the writing process with emphasis on persuasion, memoir writing, descriptive writing, poetry, and response to literature. Students identify allusions to Greek mythology and William Shakespeare in literature and the world. The skills of spelling, grammar, and usage are integrated into the study of writing. Literature study each year includes one novel and one Shakespearian play. There are many novels to choose from such as: Red Kayak, Tears of a Tiger, Touching Spirit Bear and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. The two Shakespearean plays that students' read are A Midsummer Night's Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. Students play an active role in their learning as they participate in reader's theater, collaborate with their peers, integrate technology into the classroom, and make connections to their own lives.

We’re to the point where almost everyone knows that [he or she] shouldn’t drink and drive. The people who are still doing it are choosing to do it. The most effective way to deal with them is to arrest them.”

“Candy Lightner, MADD’s founder, says she disassociated herself from the movement in 1985 because she believed the organization was headed in the wrong direction. ‘It has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned,’ said Mrs. Lightner, who founded MADD after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. ‘I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.’”
